Psion Revo recovering lost data and resolving corrupt backup

  • I have used a Revo for many years but have finally decided to move the files to an iPOD TOUCH 4 32Gb.

I have got into trouble with what seems to be a corrupted back up and have lost quite a bit of valuable data.  I tried to synchronise with Outlook so I could move the Contacts data to Gmail and this worked after a fashion but only 450 or so of 1600 odd contacts were moved.  I then tried to improve this by removing the contacts which had moved form the Revo and clearing all from Outlook and trying again.  This only moved about another 5 or so.

I wasn't too worried as I had a recent back up of the Revo (20/1/2011) but this is now corrupted somehow and many of the essential contacts are now missing.  I wasn't too worried as I had also copied an earlier backup from my laptop to a memory stick and assumed I could recover what I needed form that.  However when I tried to restore from this backup I got the message "There are no files backed up to this location" (or similar).

I then tried to alter the backup location in My Psion and now I can't access any of the files to restore (I have several Revos so I was restoring from different backups to different Revos to see if I could find more of the lost contacts)

I am not too hot on the techie side and now feel both lost and rather sick as I have lost some vital information that I can not easily replace.

    Can anyone help?

  • What you're looking for, on your memory stick or hard disk, is a contacts.cdb file in a /system/data folder. Preferably of a few hundred kilobytes.

Does such a file exist, or have you managed to accidentally wipe or delete all your backup 'backups' now?

  • Dear Steve

Many thanks for coming back to me on this.  I have finally managed to get it done.  I was pointed tot he contacts.cbd file by Gareth Saunders who also advises about deleting the synchronize file as well.

The whole process has been a bit of a nightmare and I have lost a few of the most recent contacts but recovered most of them.#

I had a lot of trouble over synchronising with Outlook.  The first pass moved about 300 contacts and then after that the only way I could do it was to delete all the ones that had been moved, delete the synchronize file and then resync with outlook which moved another 10-200 each time so over about 6 passes it was finally done but I nearly lost the will to live several times. On the second run before I knew about deleting the synchronize file it put all the ones moved in the first pass back on the Psion as duplicates so that took a few hours to sort out.

Anyway all is finally working on the iPOD Touch which is a reasonable replacement for the Revo.  The Agenda/Calendar function isn't as good as the Revo but having found a better search App (SuperSearch) which will search all fields on the iPOD I have got the Contacts part working as well as the Revo and the iPOD does other things such as email etc as long as I have wireless access so all in all it is OK but the battery doesn't last as long as the Revo.

I now have 5 or 6 Revo+ and one Revo to sell when I get back to UK.

WKR and thanks for your advice
