Hi.

Since the Raspberry Pi works with a few Variants of Linux as well as the Long running RISC OS. I decided to post there; if anyone has used the rPi to develop any solutions with, or to use it in a method consistent with using Psion technologies to enhance a development experience, or user experience with Psion technologies.

I worked with a system of Real-Time status updating for a customer Called TACT boards.

[Dict: Definition of TACT. 1. : sensitive mental or aesthetic perception ] -- I liked this description.

These boards were used to provide the workers in an assembly plant with the real-time status'es of lines that were in operation, and coloring of the results demonstrated the Quality of the line production and failure rates.

The TACT boards themselves were Ethernet to Serial interfaced (Telnet / SSH) units and could be addressed and used by multiple stations, as well as accessed by a server-side process that monitored quality, and quantity. The displays themselves were 7x12 LED Matrix panels with 6 rows for displaying text and marquee data. (We used the marquee to indicate QA test divisions in shifts to allow the associates to comprehend -when- certain testing needed to be done -- which was really well received by the workforce.)

But with HDMI connected capabilty as well as the consumer savings in the large format display segments, the ability to CHEAPLY interface an HDMI capable interface is the only stopping point. But with rPi being a sub-50-dollar solution. Well..

Digital theaters (3D or otherwise)

Our local podunk theater has completly converted to digital screens... Long gone is the little circle 'blot' in the right corner to signify the changing of the reel.... The picture, either 3D or 2D, is wonderful... No more bad spots in the film nor the darkness that comes with them...

Problem:

Who here get's bad headaches and becomes dizzy after getting out of these types of theaters? I'm not talking just the 3D ones (which are worse), but I get the same feeling coming out of any fully digital theater....

Which stinks, because I love going to the movie theater

Is cheap good when it comes at an expense?

I read an article on the German discount supermarket chains Lidl and Aldi where it was stated that strong violations of working rights are taking place in the factories they work with in Bangladesh. After earlier publications Lidl had promised to improve the standards of work environment of their producers. At the end of 2011 a team of researchers went to Bangladesh and interviewed 162 workers. In their report they concluded that workers' right violations and human rights violations are still daily practice. After the publication Lidl said they take the matter seriously and will try to improve the situtation, once again.

Surely Lidly and Aldi are not the only examples of this kind. There are several discount stores in every country slashing prices to attract consumers. There must be enough many people who give in to the temptation of buying cheap goods, that the number of discounters and their busines continue to grow. Yes, times are hard, we are all under pressure to make careful purchases and spend our money wisely. Some people more than others, but at the end of the day we are all having to "muddle through" the current economic situation.

However cheap comes at an expense, the expense of workers' human rights, working rights and the standards in which they work. When buying cheap we need to think to ourselves "what it costs some people on the other side of the world to provide us with this cheap product?" Below are 2 images of a textile factory in Bangladesh. One when the inspectors were present, one when during a night shift.

The idea is simple: Offer cheap - have it produced as cheap as possible by going to distant parts of the world and making people work for nothing, 7 days a week, in primitive conditions - and make money!

By buying cheap from those retailers we not only contribute to the business made from unethical and inhuman work conditions but also we damage the business of decent companies, which conform to human rights and working standards. This then causes job losses, closure of businesses and weakens the economy. Then we need to buy even cheaper. Where do we go then???

So there I was dropping of my Mustang rental car after a road trip through California and what do I get checked in with......a Psion terminal!

I told my new mate Musa I would make him an internet star on IW so here we go. He was a very jolly chap and told me using the Psion device made checking in returning vehicles a breeze.

Now I fell in love with California and San Francisco in particular and after finding Psion on my travels there it got me thinking.....perhaps I could get a transfer and become Psions BDM for the state of California?

Has anyone else got pictures of Psion devices in use from their travels?

Ingenuity working- first ever WAP tethered stylus?

I started with Psion as a "mobile sales manager" in the US- 7 years ago. I had a project on the board for 500 units. First hurdle was no CDMA- we tested vs AT&T and this 1B dollar company switched based on the seamless roaming that GSM provided. Deal breaker- we had no tethered stylus at the time- and I had an order for the first 100 units. What to do? Well, I made them in my garage- took two hours each as I had to drill a hole in the existing stylus, stitch a loop and fastener to the chord, and finally stitch a holder on the case-whew. Well, we rolled out the entire project. Shortly after we started shipping them our new, factory tethered stylus. I received a surprisng request "we like the old ones better, can we get those instead?" Sorry, that guy is out of the tethered stylus business!

So exactly HOW WELL does the bluetooth feature work on newer GPS units?

I've picked out a couple of GPS possibilities and given the list to my wife as a subtle hint on something that I'd like to find under the tree. My current GPS is more than 4 years old and back then I don't remember any of them offering bluetooth/phone pairing. Many of the mid-range and up units now offer this feature. I'm curious as to how well this feature works. In my opinion, it seems like the microphone would be pretty far away from my mouth when the GPS is mounted using the suction cup mount.

Both units that made my list with this feature are:

- Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT
