One of our key markets is "Utilities" and I have been asked on a number of occasions by end users if we have the ability to integrate a torch into our handheld(s)? The need is driven by the user often working in poorly lit environments and they often rely on the brightness of the screen as a means of reading a mete for example. Could we integrate a LED based torch into a device? What would be in the implications of doing so?
Hi Gareth,
We developed an LED torch (plenty powerful enough for reading a meter) here at Blackroc to be located in the rear pod of a WAP, originally to support Blackroc's C32M camera. Schematics were done, layout mostly done, but not conluded because we are developing so many Psion based products at the moment.
Hi Tony,
This sounds interesting, could you integrate this into our OMNII platform? We may have an opportunity were this would be required.
Thanks
Gareth
I don't see why not. The electronics would be largely the same. We would need a pod on the Omnii with a window to shine the light through. Then a board support structure would need to be engineered inside the pod. All stuff we have done before, so no serious challenges in this. It all boils down as usual to volume and cost.
Thanks Tony, i'll be in contact on this.
Can’t we just reuse the flash (part of the camera) on the Omni as a torch light, turning it on/off by using the SDK api?
There are simple app's available for smart phones that do the same thing.
This is a great idea, Bal. The Omnii has two leds for the camera. Okay, it is not a high power led torch but should be sufficient enough for a range of 2 - 3 meters.
I agree this could work really well, I guess the question is what impact would this have on the battery life?
Depends on the LED Lighting solution and its current draw.
If the Device is part of a solution where the "Flashlight" (Torch) can be 2-3 step selectable by software, then the LED switching can work against battery availability.
(Off, Pulse, Low, High) {Pulse is a special condition where battery power can be conserved, and HIGH INTENSITY (H.I.) used with alternating LED sets -- similar to H.I. LED Bicycle lights, and does not wear out the LED lights} -sean

I was recently told that the top selling mobile phone in India has an led torch in the end cap... If Nokia can do it.....
