Introduction

These instructions apply to A.R.C. Server version 4.0.

System Requirements

The A.R.C. Server runs on the following platforms:

 
Windows XP Professional.
 
Windows 7.
The A.R.C. Installer Includes...
 
A.R.C. Server application.
 
Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5.
 
SQL Server Express 2008 R2.

Note: On Windows XP-based systems, Service Pack 3 must be installed in order to install SQL Server Express 2008 R2.

Windows Installer

The A.R.C. Server Installer requires Windows Installer version 4.5.
During installation, the A.R.C. Server Installer checks Windows Installer and prompts if an update is needed.

 

 

 

Warning:
You must reboot the computer after updating Windows Installer.If this reboot is not performed, the installation of Microsoft SQL Express will fail.

 

 

Installation

The steps for installing the A.R.C. Server are as follows:

 
1.
Download the A.R.C. Server Installer.
 
2.
Set up IIS (Internet Information Services).
 
3.
Run the A.R.C. Server Installer.

Set up IIS (Internet Information Services)

On Windows XP-based systems

IIS is provided as part of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system but is not installed by default.

You may have to use your Windows XP installation media to complete this process.

 
1.
On the Control Panel select Add or Remove Programs.
 
2.
Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
 
3.
Select the check-box beside Internet Information Service (IIS).
On Windows 7-based systems

To install A.R.C. on a Windows 7-based system, the following are required:

 
IIS 6 Management Console (and dependent features).
 
ASP.NET (and dependent features).

Install them as follows:

 
1.
On the Control Panel select Programs and Features.
 
2.
Select Turn Windows features on or off in the left navigation panel.
Windows Features opens.
 
3.
Expand the Internet Information Services item.
 
4.
Select the check-box beside Internet Information Service (IIS) -> Web Management Tools ->
IIS 6 Management Compatibility-> IIS 6 Management Console.
Dependent features are automatically selected.

 

 

 

Warning:
Be careful not to select IIS Management Console.

 

 
5.
Select the check-box beside Internet Information Services -> World Wide Web Services ->
Application Development Features -> ASP.NET.
Dependent features are automatically selected.

Run the A.R.C. Server Installer

Note: If you have an existing SQL 2005, or SQL 2008, database installed, and you want the A.R.C. Server to use this ­database, see the A.R.C. Administrators Guide on Ingenuity Working at
community.psion.com/knowledge/w/knowledgebase/active-remote-configuration.aspx.

Run the A.R.C. Server Installer and answer the questions when prompted, so as to configure the A.R.C. Server to run as you want it to.

Post-installation

After the A.R.C. Server is installed, you need to do the following:

 
Register the A.R.C. Server.
 
Optionally, import Open TekTerm Templates.

Register the A.R.C. Server

 
1.
Start the A.R.C. Server.
 
2.
On the File ) menu click Help.
 
3.
Select Register Product.
 
4.
Complete your registration details.
 
5.
Restart the A.R.C. Server.
Running A.R.C. in demonstration mode

If you do not register the A.R.C. Server, it runs in demonstration mode. In this mode, it has the following limitations:

 
A maximum of ten devices can be discovered and deployed to.
 
Archive files—ZIP files—cannot be imported.
 
Spreadsheet files—CSV files—cannot be imported.

Import Open TekTerm Templates

When first installed, the A.R.C. Server does not have any Open TekTerm templates. If you are using Open TekTerm, you must download the templates that apply to the versions of Open TekTerm that you are using. The instructions, and the link to the templates, are on Ingenuity Working at
