et up your Development Environment for .NET (C# and Visual Basic)

Before you start

Top

You should install all the C/C++ parts of Visual Studio as well as the .NET parts. Hand-held development often benefits from solutions that are written in native (C/C++) code. Many of the Psion-provided samples have both native and .NET projects. This makes it possible for you to take full advantage of them. See Download Psion C/C++ native installers.

What you need

Visual Studio

Psion computers using Compact Framework 3.5

The following computers are supplied with Compact Framework 3.5 installed:

EP10

Omnii

For these computers use Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.

You must also install Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Download it here.

Psion computers using Compact Framework 2.0

The following computers are supplied with Compact Framework 2.0 installed:

For these computers use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.

You must also install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite Service Pack 1. Download it  here.

You can instead use Microsoft Visual Studio 2008. You must also install Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Download it here.

Be aware...
Visual Studio 10

Visual Studio 10 creates applications for mobile devices employing Compact Framework 4 or above, running on Windows 7 and above. Currently no Psion devices support this runtime environment.

eMbedded Visual Tools 4.0

We recommend that you do not use eMbedded Visual Tools 4.0 for application development. This development environment is no longer supported by Microsoft. It cannot link to the Psion Mobile Devices SDK.

If you have to use eMbedded Visual Tools, you can safely use the underlying native interfaces (rather than their C++ exports) to the Mobile Devices SDK functions. Most of the source code for the Mobile Devices SDK is bundled with the installer. If there are parts, that you need for recompilation, that are not included in the source, post a request for them on the Developer forum.

Download Psion C/C++ native installers

Important: In many Psion-provided sample projects, most of the native/low-level operations are in C/C++ projects which create easy-to-use DLLs that can be called by .NET applications.

These native installers are required in order to take advantage of these projects.

Download for Windows Embedded CE 6.0 systems

You need to install the following as well as the Mobile Devices SDK:

Windows Embedded CE 6 Native (C/C++) MSI Installer for Visual Studio
