Introduction

This article describes how to configure a GPRS radio on the netpad loaded with EPOC operating system.

You will need the following:

  1. A GSM/GPRS enabled netpad with antenna, (note the reverse thread)
  2. Sim card. With the back of the netpad towards you Insert the Sim card with the contacts away from you with the 'shortened' edge on the left hand side, (N.B. you will need pliers to remove)
  3. Opera SIS. File downloaded in the Extras bar of the netpad
  4. OPL ISPWriter.opo. file

Epoc Settings

Part 1: Modems

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Scroll along until you see the Modem icon
  3. Double tap on the Modem icon
  4. Change 'current modem' to Internal Modem (GSM variant only)
  5. Tap Edit button and edit the following screens:
Modem screen
  1. Speed '115200'
  2. Connect via 'pc card'
  3. Fax class 'Auto
Options screen
  1. Standard default settings i.e.
  2. Loudspeaker in use until call answered
  3. Volume: medium
  4. Pause time 4 secs.
Initialization
  1. ATZ
  2. Leave other fields blank
Advanced screen
  1. Flow control : Hardware (RTS/CTS)
  2. Terminal detect: DSR/DTR) Checked
  3. Carrier detect: 'Leave unchecked'
  4. Modem type 'mobile'

Press OK twice to save the settings.

Part 2: ispWriter

Download the ispWriter.opo applet and either copy it to the C drive using My Psion or copy it to a MMC card. This facility allows the user to directly input the GPRS script settings to connect directly to the Internet via GPRS.

If ispWriter.opo was copied to the C drive, then double click on OPL ispWriter.opo
Press Continue.

A field appears which requires data input.
To input, press the keyboard icon in the tool bar on right hand side of the device
Using the soft keyboard enter in the fields:

Network Provider name: Service Provider's Name
Sim Pin: 1234
Context ID: 1
APN: Access Point Name

Example for Fido:
Network Provider name: Fido
Sim Pin: 1
Context ID: 1
APN: internet.fido.ca

Press OK to save the settings.

Using the soft keyboard again press 'y' to confirm settings.

A 'Create new file' folder appears which should read:
Name: GPRSsetup.isp
Folder: Documents
Disk: C

Press OK

If ispWrite.opo was copied to a MMC card select the D drive in bottom left hand corner of screen (if appropriate)

From the D drive of the netpad double click on OPL ispWriter.opo
Press Continue, and follow the above steps for creating the script.

Part 3: Internet Service settings

Go to the Control Panel again and double click the Internet icon. The default current internet service may read: RAS internet service.
Press New. The 'Based upon' folder appears.
Toggle and select 'settings from file'.
Click the Browse button and go to the file you created earlier called GPRSset.isp, which will have been automatically been saved in the documents directory.
Point to the file and press OK
Press OK again to continue.

Under 'Name' you will see: GPRS_Fido.ISP
Connection type should be 'Direct'.

Next, select the Account tab, and uncheck Manual login.
Using soft keyboard input the appropriate username and password if required by the Service Provider.
If a username and password is not required you may enter the following:
Username: web
Password: web

Leave all other settings unchanged.
Press Done,
Press OK

Test The Internet Connection

Press Opera icon in Extras bar
Open Web Page using the File button in the Tool bar
Using the soft keyboard choose a web site to visit (e.g. www.google.ca) to test Internet connection.
Press OK.
The 'Connect to internet settings' popup box should appear.
Verify that 'To Internet service equals the 'Name' under the Internet Service Settings, and that 'Using Modem' equals 'Internal GPRS/GSM Modem'.
Press OK to connect.
After 20 seconds or so the web site should appear.
