Problem Description

The U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, passed by the U.S. Congress July, 2005, extended Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the U.S. by approximately four weeks. As a result, beginning in 2007, DST will start three weeks earlier on March 11, 2007, and end one week later on November 4, 2007, resulting in a new DST period that is four weeks longer than previously observed. These four weeks are referred to in this article as the "extended DST period". This will affect the clock in certain areas in the USA and Canada, depending on the time zone.

What Psion Teklogix Devices are NOT Affected?

  • 7025/ 8045/ 8050
  • 7030/ 8055/ 8060
  •  7035/ 8255/ 8260
  •  9130/ 9140/ 9150/ 9160 Base Stations/ Access Points

What Psion Teklogix Devices MAY BE Affected?

If you have any of the following devices, we encourage you to read onward and if needed apply the recommended fixes to comply with the daylight saving time change:

  •  WORKABOUT PRO
  •  7530 and 7535
  • 8525 and 8530
  • 8560, 8570, 8580, and 8590
  •  NetBook Pro CE
  •  Netpad CE

This daylight savings time change may affect you if:

  • Your terminal displays the time for the end user to use
  • You are using time sensitive certificates for authentication
  •  Your application is using the time saved on the end user devices for timestamps, etc.

If necessary, for legacy Psion devices (Sibo and Symbian, i.e. Workabout, Workabout MX, Netpad, and Netbook), the only method available is manually adjusting the time.

How To Fix

Method 1: Manually adjust the clock for daylight saving time on Windows CE devices, Windows XP/ 2000/ 2003.

  1.  In Control Panel, open Date/Time.
  2.  In the Date/Time Properties dialog box, make sure that the time zone is set to the correct time zone for your area.
  3. Click to clear the Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving check box.
  4.  Click OK.
  5.  Manually adjust the clock at the start and end of the daylight saving time period.

* - While the Psion Teklogix Comm Server (S900 or 9500) is not directly affected by the DST change, the server OS should be updated as per Microsoft instructions below as needed

Please be aware that daylight saving time cannot be disabled for Windows Mobile 2003 and 2005 running devices. In that situation use Method #2

Method 2: Install Windows updates as listed below
Windows CE and Windows Mobile updates

Psion Teklogix released new OS add-on updates (.CAB files) for the following operating systems:

Windows CE.NET 4.2 or 5.0 Click here for the OS update and instructions
Windows Mobile 2003 and 5.0 – Workabout PRO Click here for the OS update and instructions

Customers and partners are encouraged to download and install these on their affected terminals. All units shipped before or during the “extended DST period” (March- April 2007) will require these new updates. These updates will be incorporated into the next OS images to be released in the future.

Windows XP and Windows Server OS updates

Windows XP (SP2),
Windows Server 2003,
Windows Server SP1
For 9500 CommServer, 8560/8570/8580/8590
Update available The Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 updates are available for production deployment for all customers through the Microsoft Download Center, Knowledge Base article 928388, Windows Update and WSUS. While this update is currently being offered as optional, once the Outlook and the Exchange Time Zone Update tools are completed, Microsoft expects to change the classification of 928338 to high priority or critical. At this time all customers should have removed the test version of the Windows time zone update released under Knowledge Base article 924840.
Windows 2000
for 9500 CommServer
8560/8570
Update available - (under Extended Hotfix Support) Windows 2000 has passed the end of Mainstream Support and will not be receiving an update without Extended Hotfix Support.
All versions of Windows can be manually updated using the tzedit.exe utility or other techniques documented in Knowledge Base article 914387, Online Webcast 930688, and similar articles for other countries, which is the preferred method of remediation for any product outside of Mainstream Support. (The tzedit.exe tool allows you to create and edit time zone entries for the Date/Time settings in the Control Panel, especially for daylight-saving time).
