Introduction

The use of power supply wall adaptors not supplied by Psion can lead to component failure caused by over-voltage conditions in the WORKABOUT PRO series of hand-held computers.

Discussion

The WORKABOUT PRO hand-held computer uses the Psion model PS1050-G1 (PHIHONG PSA15R-050P) external power adaptor to charge its main battery. This power adaptor provides 100-240 VAC input with a regulated 5 V output, capable of delivering 3.0 A. The WORKABOUT PRO has a barrel-type DC connector with a 1.25 mm inside diameter (ID), 3.5 mm outside diameter (OD), and is 7.0 mm in length.

Since there isn't an industry standard for barrel-type DC connectors and voltage as such, different manufacturers may use the same connector type with different power supplies. This raises the possibility that interchanging the PS1050-G1 power supply with that of another product may damage your WORKABOUT PRO. For example, we have demonstrated that the AT17947-1 12 V/1.5 A power supply distributed with Zebra printers causes power system failure if used with the WORKABOUT PRO.

If your work requires that you make use of multiple power adaptors, we recommend that you label your power supplies to ensure the correct match of power supplies to equipment.

Repairs and Warranty

WORKABOUT PRO power system failure caused by the use of power supplies other than those specified by Psion will not qualify for warranty repair. Warranty claims may require the customer to include the power supply to verify that the correct power supply was used.
