8515 multiple serial port

8515 multiple serial port

This question is not answered

Hi

I need to connect 2 serial devices to a 8515. One can use the existing serial port and I'm trying to setup a USB to serial adapter to connect the other device. I have a Sunix-UTS1009D USB 1.0 to RS-232 adapter but cannot get it to load the drivers

The install docs have the following step - Preparation prior to installation
Copy driver file into the your platform BSP "File" folder. (SUN1889.DLL,SUN1699.DLL,SunixSerialCardControl.exe)

   Path Example : _WINCEROOT\Platform\MyBSP\File\

("_WINCEROOT" is your platform builder folder name)
("MyBSP" is your platform BSP base name)

I cannot locate the WINCEROOT or MyBSP shown above, any ideas ? Does Psion call these something else ?

Has anyone tried to do something similar ?

Thanks

Martin

  • Hi Martin,

Is the CE driver written for x86 or ARM processor?

  • The instructions above look like instructions for adding the driver to Platform Builder on the PC. Platform Builder a Microsoft program that we use at Psion to create software images for WINCE. Ideally, the USB to Serial manufacturer should provide the driver in a cab file.

  • Hi Martin.

Dave Pyle indiated that what you see is the System Builder config. That is more advanced to deal with.  In essence, if the Sunix USB to Serial has a windows CE supported driver installer (A .CAB file that supports the driver) then you can add the sunix.

However, there is an alternative.  The Psion WA4015 USB/Serial adaptor device is supported by the Windows CE that runs on the 8515. You plug it in and connect your second RS-232 device to the WA4015 Dongle.

  • Hi

The original wasn't but the adapter supplier then supplied a cab file for ARM which when extracted has 2 files in it - .000file and .001 file. When extracted, this creates a folder on the 8515 with no contents.

I've tried copying the driver.exe file and the files from the cab file into the folder created but can't get the driver to run. When I plug the adapter in it comes up with a message 'unidentified USB device' and wants me to enter driver name.....tried several times but can't get it to work.

Is there possibly a specific location I need to run the cab file in for it to extract to the correct place ?

    Thanks

  • Hi

A cab file has been supplied and it extracts itself when you run it on the 8515 but i still can't get it to work...may be that I'm placing it in the wrong folder to work properly ?

The pricelist I have doesn't show the WA4015 but has a WA4070 USB to Ethernet adapter for 8515 - will this one work ?

    Thanks

  • Hi Martin.

Did you move the .CAB file to the 8515 and run it there?

If you unpack on the PC -- that won't work. You can move it to the 8515 via USB thumb drive or Activesync.

  • Hi Martin.

The WA4070 is Ethernet, not Serial.  For WA4015; you may need to check with Sales.

  • Sorry - ignore previous post as the WA4070 is USB to Ethernet and I need USB to serial, Do you know if the WA4015 is still available as I can't find it on the pricelist ?

    Martin

  • Hi Sean

Yes, put it in the Windows folder and then ran it there. It comes up with an (intsall here) message box during the process which I called USBSER (same as the cab file name). A USBSER folder is then created with no contents, checked for hidden files and folder properties say 0 bytes.

Any ideas on how else I should run this cab file ? There is also a serialdevicedriver.exe that came with the original drivers but it says this is not a valid CE application. However, according to the supplier this should work when used with the cab supplied. ANy specific location this should be loaded in to or way it should be run ?

    Thanks

  • Hi Martin.

Usually I suggest moving install files like this to "\Flash Disk\" folder.  Set the property of the file to "Read-Only"

Double Click the .CAB file to install it, and allow it to choose it's defaults.

If it is installed, you then can plug in the Serial Adapter and the "Unidentified USB device" dialog should go away.

If it does not, then either the driver was not installed correctly, or the install does not work with the adapter.

At which point you may need to check with Sales to look at alternatives.

The Sunix is a PL-2303 prolific device, but if the USB to Serial is different than the PL2303 driver expects to find, it will not work.

  • Hi

Thanks, I'll try this later when I get to the office. It did create a PL-2303 uninstall file aswell so it sounds as though the cab file is doing what its supposed to.

I thought I would need to run the .exe as well to be able to setup the com port....should this be necessary ? Do you know if it would setup the port as COM 2 for example by defaut as I assume the existing serial port on the 8515 is COM 1 ?

    Cheers
